In this digital era of instant everything, there’s something special about film photography.

As someone who grew up with film and witnessed the rise of digital photography, I understand the appeal of returning to a simpler, more intentional approach. In this article, we’ll explore why shooting on film is worth considering, despite its slower pace, limited resources, higher cost, and undeniable charm in a world obsessed with pixel-perfect images.

Personally, I have a deep appreciation for digital photography, and I would never part with my trusty mirrorless camera. However, I must confess that there’s an indescribable sensation when I pick up the old SLR that was passed down to me by my grandfather, dating back to the late 80s (yes, around the time of my birth!). Its nostalgic value aside, there’s something truly magical about capturing moments with that vintage camera that defies explanation.

Embracing Slowness

Film photography encourages us to slow down and be deliberate in our approach. Each shot requires thoughtful consideration of composition, lighting, and subject, fostering a deeper connection with our craft and the moment.

Limitations Inspire Creativity

With a finite number of exposures on a roll, film photography forces us to be selective and intentional. This limitation nurtures our creativity, sharpening our skills in composition, exposure, and timing.

Investing in Each Frame

Film photography comes with a price tag for every frame. However, this expense reinforces the value we place on each shot, motivating us to refine our technique and strive for excellence.

Intentionality and Mindfulness

Shooting on film demands intentionality. From choosing the right film stock to considering camera settings, every decision influences the final outcome. This mindful approach deepens our understanding of photography and enhances our attention to detail.

Returning to Simplicity

Amidst our digital world, film photography offers a refreshing simplicity. The mechanical charm of film cameras and their timeless aesthetic appeal to those seeking a more tactile and authentic experience.

Conclusion

Film photography holds a special place for those who appreciate its unique qualities and intentional approach. It allows us to slow down, reconnect with the artistry of photography, and find beauty in every frame.

Despite the digital revolution, the interest in film continues to grow, attracting a community of like-minded enthusiasts.

Frankly speaking, I’ve always had mixed feelings when, after a couple of weeks on vacation, I returned with thousands of photos, only to realize that most of them didn’t hold any special meaning for me. Out of those numerous shots, I found myself genuinely liking only about 20 of them.

The truth is, with digital photography, I often snapped pictures simply because I felt obligated to capture a certain landmark or scene, just because everyone else was doing the same or because it held some perceived importance.

Yet, ironically, those images never made it to my top 20 favorites. However, with film photography, my approach is much more intentional, resulting in a higher number of truly remarkable shots!

Whether you’re captivated by film’s charm or looking to diversify your photography journey, picking up a film camera can reignite the magic that lies within film photography.
